FLN First Step Maths Modules and Period Plans by SCERT Telangana

Primary education is like the foundation of schooling. It paves the way for the achievement
of educational goals. These goals include logical thinking and mathematical abilities. Students will
be able to achieve elementary and higher level mathematical skills only when proper foundational
numerical skills are practiced at the elementary level. Students are lagging behind at the primary leve lin the acquisition of these basic mathematical competencies and the gap keeps widening throughout schooling. National Achievement Survey - 2021 results reveal that around 70% of students are at minimum level or below in the numeracy. It seriously affects the learning of students.

In addition to this, the learning crisis creates many challenges to the school education. Considering
these circumstances, Department of School Education has initiated a flagship programme ‘Tholimettu/ First Step’ at the primary level in the state of Telangana in partnership with ‘Central Square Foundation’, a voluntary organization for improving basic literacy & numeric competencies to achieve class-wise learning outcomes from the academic year 2022-23.

Accordingly, the State Council of Educational Research and Training has prepared model
annual, unit/lesson plans and daily period plans for teachers and work books for children, keeping
in view of their work load for 1 to 5. Utilizing these, the teachers are expected to make the teaching
and learning processes meaningful and students to participate actively and make their learning joyful.

Teachers can discuss these plans in school complex meeting, conduct demonstration lessons
and moderate plans as per their need to gain more expertise in their respective subjects. Based on
those, teaching and learning processes can be organized objectively in terms of planning in professional capacity development.

The team members of ‘Central Square Foundation’ who participated in the design of handbooks
from the beginning of the ‘Tholimettu’ program till today are acknowledged for their coordination
and commendable work.

We believe that ‘Tholimettu’ programme will be a milestone in the advancement of quality
education and all students will be able to achieve the learning outcomes prescribed for their level.

Mathematics
Plan for Teaching and learning process :

Total working days in the academic year 2023-24 are 220 days for conducting teaching and learning processes.
5 + 1 system is advised. That is 5 days of teaching is to be followed by 1 assessment.day.
For this, to be affective, all the children need to participate in activities to understand the concepts and utilise those competencies in their day-to-day life. For this we prepared period plans for teachers and work books for students.

Period Plan :

Mathematics instruction is for 90 minutes a day.
In the first 45 minutes the teacher makes the students understand the concepts of the topic. Basically it’s a teaching time. Children should practice during the second 45 minutes. This is considered as practice time. The workbook should be used effectively by motivating the children to solve problems individually.
Keep this in mind, divide the time of 90 minutes and conduct the teaching and learning process every day.
Learning outcomes / micro-competencies to be achieved by the end of the period.

Teaching period (First 45 minutes) :

i) Greetings and strengthening of pre-concept 8 min.
ii) Introduction to the concept 2 min.
iii) Activities for conceptual understanding 25 min.
iv) Problem solving 10 min.

Practice period (Second 45 minutes) :

i) Completing worksheets by students individually 20 min.
ii) Remedial teaching by teacher 25 min.

I do (Whole class activity) :

“I do” indicates teachers activities. In this, teacher gives instructions to introduce the concept,
explains, demonstrates, make students understand process of problem solving etc. through whole
class interaction.

We do (Group activity) :

“We do” indicates group work of students along with teacher. In this students are engaged
with meaningful activities in groups to understand the concept extensively.

You do (Individual activity) :

“You do” indicates students individual work and practice.
