Noun:
Names a person, place, thing, or idea (e.g., dog, house, happiness).


Count Nouns
Nouns that can be counted as individual items are referred to as count nouns.
Ex: Hen - Hens
Incorrect: The woman who were working on the magazine received
awards for design, layout, and content development.
Explanation: The count noun is the subject of the plural verb were, so the two must agree.
Correct: The women who were working on the magazine received
awards for design, layout, and content development.

Non-count Nouns
When something cannot be counted directly, we call these non-count nouns. These
nouns do not have a plural form.
Non-count nouns do not pluralize.
Incorrect: Our teacher gives us a lot of homeworks.
Explanation: Homework is a non-count noun, so it cannot take a plural form.
Correct: Our teacher gives us a lot of homework.

Irregular Noun Plurals:
There are some common exceptions to the plural rules for nouns.
Some of them include:
tooth - teeth
man - men
mouse - mice
woman - women
child - children
Some other count nouns do not have a plural form.
Some of these include:
fish - fish
moose - moose
aircraft - aircraft
means - means
Incorrect: Deers come in our yard and eat all our flowers.
Correct: Deer come in our yard and eat all our flowers.

Abstract Nouns
Many abstract nouns are formed by adding suffixes (-ness, -ity, -tion) to adjectives or verbs to
make a noun form. Examples are happiness, formality, and gradation.
Some nouns take one suffix and not another. extensiveness not extensivity centrality not
centralness
Incorrect: The new office arrangement increased the productiveness of the staff.
Correct: The new office arrangement increased the productivity of the staff.

1) Proper Noun
Names that specifically refer to a single person, place, or thing are called
Proper Nouns.
Ex: Manohar, Raviteja, The Godavari, Agra, Paris, The Vindhyas.

2) Common Noun : Same Common nouns are names that belong to every object or person in a
genus. Ex: man, girl, cow, camel, house, school, book, pen, tree, ship.

3) Collective Noun: Collective Nouns denote groups of people, animals, or things. Ex Army,
Crowd, Herd
1. An army of soldiers.
2. A band of musicians.
3. A bevy of girls.
4. A board of directors.
5. A basket of fruits.
6. A bench of judges.
7. A brood of chickens.

4) Material Noun
in a single mass, solid, liquid, or gas without separate parts
a) Names of substances that accumulate: rice, sugar, sand, grass, etc.
b) Names of substances that form lumps: gold, mud, jaggery, curd, etc.
c) Names of substances that are liquid: milk, honey, water, oil, etc.
d) Names of substances that are gaseous: air, oxygen, nitrogen, etc.

5. Abstract Nouns: Names of qualities such as goodness, badness, white, red, length, width,
etc.; names of actions such as walking, seeing, flying, etc.; names of states such as poverty,
childhood, happiness, etc.; names of sciences such as grammar, music, astrology, etc. are
called Abstract Nouns.
qualities: goodness, cleverness, wisdom, honesty, truth, whiteness, length, breadth, height,
bravery
actions : walk, sight, flight, pain, choice, protection, punishment
