Foundational Concepts: Clauses
* Independent (Main) Clause:
Expresses a complete thought and can stand alone as a sentence. Contains a subject and a finite verb.
* Dependent (Subordinate) Clause:
Contains a subject and a finite verb, but starts with a subordinating conjunction. It cannot stand alone.
1. Simple Sentence
A simple sentence contains only one independent clause with a single finite verb. It may include non-finite verbs (infinitives, gerunds, participles) or prepositional phrases, but never more than one main predicate.
* Formula: \text{1 Independent Clause (1 Subject + 1 Finite Verb)}
* Birds fly.
* Seeing the police, the thief ran away. (Seeing = non-finite participle; ran = finite verb)
* In spite of his poverty, he is honest.
2. Compound Sentence
A compound sentence consists of two or more independent clauses of equal grammatical rank, joined together by coordinating conjunctions or semicolons.
* Formula: \text{Main Clause + Coordinating Conjunction + Main Clause}
* Key Connectors (FANBOYS): For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, So.
* Correlative Conjunctions: Not only... but also, Either... or, Neither... nor.
* He worked hard, and he passed the exam.
* He is poor, but he is honest.
* Run fast, or you will miss the train.
3. Complex Sentence
A complex sentence contains one main (independent) clause and at least one subordinate (dependent) clause, linked by a subordinating conjunction.
* Formula: \text{Main Clause + Subordinating Conjunction + Subordinate Clause} (or vice versa)
* Key Connectors: Because, since, as, although, though, even though, if, unless, when, while, where, after, before, that, who, which, whose, as soon as.
